Christmas Time Pictures & Newsletter

After finding it difficult to begin this newsletter, I searched Google! Of course I found some rather helpful suggestions. One idea said newsletters should be lighthearted and cheerful but of course there are occasions when one might need to mention the passing of a loved one. So it is with sadness that I begin with the passing of our sweet guinea pig, Brownie, in May! I never thought that I could ever love a member of the rodent family so much but I did. I’ll admit that his death was my fault. I cried like a baby for a good while. At which point Julia interrupted and said “Well can we just go to the party now?” Just last week Samuel brought this up again to Caleb “First you took my loving dog, Lucky, then it was my loving guinea pig, Brownie by letting mom dehydrate him!” That’s it in a nutshell regarding his untimely death and I’ll offer up no other details!

During this Christmas season we will take some time to read our previous newsletters with the kids. This year is special because the boys will read them on their own and before we can blink we know Julia will be at their side as well. They are all growing up so fast and are good little people. We hope you enjoy reading about some of our own memories from this year.

Samuel and Nicholas started first grade this year. Each of their classes did projects in which they drew timelines of their firsts (i.e. first tooth loss, first bike ride). Reminders of this year’s firsts have come to mind. Some of which include jumping off the high dive at the close of swim lessons (I almost couldn’t watch), firing a shotgun (with dad), catching their first fish, and going bird hunting. They are rough and tough little guys who search out grand adventures. After we were done with our pumpkins this year they used them for making up a game of bowling. They rolled them down into “Crocodile Lake” (really the retention pond). The outside is their terrain and if kept away too long you might have a fight on your hand! They truly are like their father in so many ways. I ran across a quote recently it said “Every boy should have two things: a dog, and a mother willing to let him have one."- Anonymous. So yes we felt the longing and just today picked up our sweet lab puppy, her name Hannah Montana Smith! We can only pray this one will survive our home.

Julia started VPK this year and (just about) daily tells me she’s shy. Two years ago I would have never labeled her a “shy” child but I guess we know that growing up is hard to do. She cries “I don’t want to go mommy….I just will miss you so so so so bad!” I hope that it is a while before I’ll need to remind her of a time when she couldn’t stand to leave my side. She is my baby, yes 5 yrs old now, but still my littlest one and as such I want to keep her that way for as long as I can. Julia participated in gymnastics and swimming and enjoyed them both very much. Although her ballet experience was not so fun, the swim coach suggested we put her on a swim team. We just may have found her forte.

I am happy to report that Caleb and I are doing well. We didn’t make our goal of losing the weight. I guess that’s another thing we can continue working at in 2010! So we will recite these simple words to improve our chances. As I wake up from sleep, I pray my diet I may keep, but if temptation makes me slip, I pray today my pants won’t rip. This will keep us motivated in our quest to achieve model like figures for sure. We will also continue to stay busy as husband & wife and father & mother. This year we took separate vacations for a little time away. He went with his guy friends to the mountains and I went for more of the girls retreat style. It was relaxing for both.

I learned this year that there are those who read newsletters and think of them as unnecessary. So I’ll close with this suggestion from a website. In determining whom to send your newsletters to, it read “Know when to quit. If they don't send you a card or newsletter for three years, stop sending them one. You can tell yourself they are too busy to write, but you're fooling yourself, and they are wondering how long it will take you to take the hint. Sometimes it's like driving a dull nail through a thick plank.” Let me just close with saying it takes me a long time to get a hint. I still love getting nice letters and cards in my mailbox rather than just bills or junk mail so I’ll keep my own tradition and you just try to humor me as long as possible.

I pray we may all see and feel the reasons to be joyful during these fleeting days. As for us, we are the happiest when we are safe in the walls of our home with each other. Although there are many of you we have not seen in quite some time (even years), may we extend our love to you during this holiday season. We thank our Heavenly Father each day for blessing us with wonderful family and friends who we cherish. We also thank Him for a loving Savior whose life we wish to emulate.
Merry Christmas everyone! The Smith Family (Caleb, Kim, Samuel (7), Nicholas (7), Julia (4 – will be 5 on Jan. 5th)

Turtely

Samuel found this cute baby turtle. He found him near the mailbox just before Caleb dug up the grass while doing some landscaping! He was so small it is amazing that he was even spotted. We had been thinking about keeping for a pet but then after a week I found out that they can be carriers for salmonella. YUK! So we told the kids he really needed to find his way back home. Nicholas was so sweet. He is so gentle with little creatures. He watched him till he couldn't see him anymore. I'm learning more and more about the phrase "never say never". I used to say I would never want pets. WRONG! We tried out Lucky (bless him) and now we have Brownie, the guinea pig and we have Fishy! We almost had Turtley! Did you catch the similarties of the all the names "e or y" sounds!! Makes me laugh!

Pictures with the Kids

When I saw all the pictures that Caleb took of me and the kids I had to post!
That was all I wanted on Mothers Day! See for yourself what we ended up with!

Mothers Day

Happy Mothers Day! So I've been treating this weekend like it is my birthday! I have really enjoyed myself. I am feeling just a tad spoiled. Caleb sent me some flowers yesterday. He also took me out for a night alone. Caleb also sent his mom and my mom some flowers too! (He really earned some brownie points for that!) I wanted to share a little poem that I copied onto a 4x6 for the children in Primary to do tomorrow for their mothers. I thought it turned out super cute. I got the poem off Sugardoodle that someone had posted. TOO CUTE!

Birthday Card

I created this birthday card for Leslie's little ones. I like how it came together. The Photoscape program I am using is pretty user friendly. If I can get creative like this I know anyone can. Just wanted to share.

Hannah Montana

This morning on the way home from spending the night at Granny's house a conversation quickly turned to Hannah Montana. My mom began to talk with my dad about how the rain falling in Kansas was up to about 5". My dad said "well 5ft of snow got dumped on Montana!" Julia screamed and said "On Hannah Montana...oh my goodness?" No, they quickly told her they were talking about the state of Montana! She is still a little confused.

New Font

I can't believe it...but I just followed a butt load of directions from a font website to get this lovely new font on my blog. I hope you all like the header font because it took me forever! Well, really only about 30 mins....but I could have been sleeping instead.

Moms Birthday

We had fun going to dinner with mom for her birthday. We we went to the Okki hibachi and we had an amazing chef. Obviously he helped set the tone for the evening. When he heard it was moms birthday he went all out. He had his guitar brought out and he sang about 3 songs to her that evening. How fun! During the onion volcano he had us sing Happy Birthday and at the end of the night the entire staff sang Happy Birthday in japanese. I know mom enjoyed herself and we had tons of fun seeing her so happy!

School Festival

I learned alot from the whole school festival experience! The biggest thing was to read the fine print on the paper sent home from school. We spent more money than we should have and basically walked away with purple and green hair. I can't say it didn't go to a good cause. The boys go to a wonderful school and Julia will be there soon enough. Of course the main thing was...we were together and the kids had fun! Oh and the principal is the one standing with Samuel in the bottom left corner.
That would be Mr. Cooey. The kids really like their principal.

Julia the Easter Chick

Easter Egg Hunt Attendies

Easter Scrapbook Page

So I am feeling a little creative since being taught this digital scrapbooking! I have another page to do for Julia! But I thought I would share what I have done so far.
We had a fun filled Easter Weekend! Our weekend was kicked off with the Primary Easter Activity on Friday! The boys went on a campout with dad on Friday night and Julia got to sleep over with Granny & Papa! I enjoyed a book club meeting and an evening with myself. I appreciate my little bits of time alone!
On Saturday evening we took the kids to the beach to fly kites and watch the sun set!
Sunday couldn't have been better as we went to church and heard beautiful music and lessons of the Savior! My parents joined us at the Smith home for a nice Easter meal and egg hunt! I am ready for a vacation again!

Stawberry Pickin

I love the strawberry fields in Baker, FL. It was a little colder this day than last year when we went. Jennifer and her girls, and Leslie and her girls met up with us to do some pickin. We all enjoy getting some strawberry shortcake dessert and yogurt. I took these pretty pictures with Leslie's camera and boy I really love the clarity of the images.

Dr. Suess Friends

My friend Amberlynn taught me how to do scrapbook pages. I have done some but am still organizing. I thought I would share some cute pictures of the boys in their Dr. Suess attire! I really need to get better about updating this blog.

I hate the words "SHUT-UP"!

Samuel had been coming home and acting strange in the afternoons. It had been going on for about a week or more. I had assumed it was him getting used to his new teacher. His other teacher had taken her maternity leave. After a few rough afternoons, I found out that he was sitting next to a bully. This bully named J.T. was telling him to shut-up! I knew worse things could be said....so...I sat on this information for one more day. When he got off the bus again and I asked if it was any better he just said "It's weird he just tells me to shut-up, but Nicholas can talk...He gets off at the second stop and then I get to talk again!" OH NO NO NO!!!
Mama don't play that game. Of course I took care of it with the school and he is not being bothered anymore and he is acting better in the afternoons too. How could you say shut-up to such a sweet child anyhow.

Nicholas the Writer

I loved watching the boys learn to read and write since starting Kindegarten. Nicholas has always been interested in drawing and writing letters. As he has learned these writing skills he expresses himself more and more on paper. I have found him time after time sitting at the table staring at a piece of paper with a pencil in hand. He already knows how to let the imagination flow. I like to think he gets that talent from me. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I wanted to share a few thoughts. The first is a letter to his dad. He writes...Dear Daddy, I love you because you take me to places. I like you too! You are cool. I love you. You are the best daddy. I love you so much. Love, Nicholas.
The second is the story. It reads..There was a man who makes a cake on Valentines day. It did not look good because it had frogs all over the cake. And it had a spider on it. It was cool too!
I hope he will always enjoy this art and continue to excercise this talent.

Disney World & Cruise

So I have to admit it...we are Disney fanatics! We just returned from our vacation. I must say that I love vacations. I really enjoy the opportunity to get away with the family. This is the second year that everyone on Caleb's family went on a Disney cruise together. They are the best!!!! It is the best way to get 20+ people together. It's nice to be able to see everyone throughout the day and then come back together for a nice 4 course meal and then follow it up with a broadway style show. While on our trip Samuel lost his other front tooth one morning in the hotel. The boys were wrestling on white linen bed. Check out his new picture! I have really gotten a kick out of seeing his two front teeth gone. :) Just thought I would share some pictures of our trip!

Toothless Sammy Pie

Samuel has been walking around for a good two weeks with jacked up looking teeth. He has had 3 loose for quite some time. This week each night I would sit on him and try my hardest to get that loose tooth out (most of the time he thought it was funny)! At dinner tonight, Caleb came up with a plan that we would tie floss to his tooth....and rather than slam a door.....we would have the monster truck pull it out! And yes...we have success. Please see the following video.
You know on Monday I had an aggrevating day. Have you ever heard the phrase..."A mother is only as happy as her saddest child!" I have thought about that saying alot this week. I feel like I sometimes find myself in this category. I must say though....it is nights like these that I know "A mother is as happy as her happiest child!!!" Enjoy the footage. (Oh and you may want to mute my music playlist at the bottom of my blog if you can't hear the video that well!)

Julia Bug Turned 4!

Our little Julia turned 4 on January the 5th! I chose that date because that was her great-grandfathers birthday. Yeah I like c-sections for that reason...for the most part you can pick a birthday. She woke up the morning of her birthday and made two changes. I had been talking to her for a few months about giving her sippy cup up on her birthday. That morning she didn't even ask! WOW. Then at the end of her day she went to sleep with no snuggles. Caleb and I have always failed at establishing boundaries for bedtime. Our kids still get snuggles for longer periods than we like....most of the time it is until they fall asleep. They also wake up during the night and climb into bed with us. It works most nights. Well she said that night she was 4 now and didn't need them anymore. So I had to post a picture of own sleeping beauty. We are so proud of her. Birthdays in our home almost always turn into more than a "day" affair. Julia had a fun filled weekend packed with a couple family get-togethers. I have posted a pic of her giving her dad a "marry kiss" as she calls it at the end of a slow-dance they shared. The day of her actual birthday we went to Jump-n-party for some fun with her cousins. I can't believe it my baby is 4!

New Year - New Things!

Have you seen this before? I just used it for the first time. One is located about 1 mile from my home. I love it. Here I was standing outside of a gas station and renting a movie for $1! My neice Alyssa and I were just laughing our heads off! I think people thought we were strange. If you go to Red Box website ahead of time you are eligible to get your first rental free! Anyhow....new year and new things to do. Happy New Year!
